Migrant Education Health Services

The purpose of the Health Services Component of the Migrant Education Program is to provide supplementary health and social services, helping migrant students to achieve their maximum academic potential.

Services provided by the Health Services Component include:
  • Assessment of health, medical and dental referrals from school staff and parents. Refer students and families, as needed, using available resources.
  • Migrant nurses act as resources to district health personnel.
  • Case management for complex medical cases is done, including coordination of services with appropriate agencies.
  • Special projects/training: dental sealant projects, HIV training, CPR/First Aid training and mentoring projects.
  • Review and assessment of health records of migrant students and MEES students.
  • Provide dental, vision and hearing screenings at teacher and parent requests. Also, screenings of non-mandated grades with appropriate follow-up and referral.
  • Educate families regarding available and appropriate health insurance programs. Assist with application process as indicated.
  • Provide parent education via parent meetings and health fairs.
  • Migrant nurses act as health information resource for staff.
  • Individualized health education of families in their homes.
  • Work with local medical, dental, and optometric providers to ensure children's needs are met.
