Outdoor Education - SCICON

The Outdoor Education Program is a summer program component within the California Mini-Corps program designed to assist with the education of students. The program provides migrant students an opportunity to experience learning outside of the classroom. The migrant students are sent for a week to camp. The camp is administered by a Mini-Corps principal and the camp instructors are the Mini-Corps students. The children are always supervised and are assigned to groups.

The program objectives are:
  • To provide migrant students the opportunity to experience education outside of the classroom, where they are able to construct meaning that leads to thinking, sharing, exploring, questioning, and developing their own understanding of lessons provided by the instructors.
  • To teach migrant children science concepts in a natural setting that will foster an understanding of ecology, plant life, earth science, physical science, etc.
  • To teach migrant children a respect for nature, thus developing an understanding of how nature works and how human beings affect the environment. By teaching migrant students respect for nature, strategies will be introduced that will further develop their thinking concerning personal expectations, goal setting, and general leadership skills.
  • To provide Mini-Corps students an opportunity to work in an outdoor environment where they can enhance their instructional skills.
