Tulare County Office of Education

The goal of the Harvest of the Month program is to increase enjoyment and consumption of fruits and vegetables. Students have the opportunity to taste and explore a different featured fruit or vegetable each month. This in-classroom taste-testing gives students the chance to try healthy foods, and learn about them at the same time.

Nearly 27,000 students participate in Harvest of the Month each month. Along with the featured produce, teachers receive an informational resource packet with ties to curricula areas such as mathematics, science, art, reading and history. This educational material encourages open-ended exploration in which the process is more important than the answer. As students share these Harvest of the Month experiences with their families, we have found that the students often become "teachers" themselves.

The Harvest of the Month program is a joint project of the Tulare County Office of Education Nutrition Network and the Alta Vista, Cutler-Orosi, Dinuba, Exeter, Pixley, Porterville, and Strathmore Child Nutrition Services.
